Hey guys I am very new to Guild Wars, just started, and I am wondering what I should pick up as a second profession. I am only level 2 and only have the regular guild wars game of the year edition.

You won't have the attribute points to spend to make an effective 2 profession character early on so concentrate on pure ranger, just pick monk so you can have a reusable ressurection. Rangers tend to be the last to die in a party, so being able to escape and then bring your entire part back alive will save you a lot of failed missions as you go through the game.
Later, you can change to whatever secondary suits you on demand.

Fay Vert is right, pick a monk for the reuseable (hard) rez. Very nice to have in the early levels.

You can always change it later on, but the monk secondary for the reusable ressurection spell (like Restore Life, Rebirth, Renew Life, etc) is best for early game.

Point to note that many experienced players forget to mention.
Yes you can change your secondary class later in the game but if you are really unhappy and its your first character than it may be better to start another character.
In Prophesies the path to changing your secondary class is long its a heck of a long way into the game.
Factions and Nightfall its not so bad.
Try all ! secondary classes before deciding and only when your happy take the decision to stick with it till you reach the place you can change it.
Monk is pretty useful

I've had a ranger/monk and a ranger/mesmer. The monk secondary was far more useful early on, but really after a point you get enough skills from quests and skill trainers that you'll mostly be using your primary profession anyway. I agree with gremlin, give them all a try and see which you prefer.

The only problem with trying them is you can't because the very limited skills you get access to don't really give you a flavour of what that secondary will be as soon as you advance out of the starting area.

Since you are asking, I would recommend R/Mo. Get as many skills and elite skills as you can as you learn how to play your ranger in different situations. The monk secondary will help keep you alive. Once you know the ranger's pros and cons switch your secondary. Read the forums... a lot of people before you have tried many builds.
